FAQ

1. Why do people from all over the world choose to study at UC Santa Cruz?

The University of California, Santa Cruz, is one of the most beautiful university campuses in the world. Surrounded by towering redwoods and the crashing surf of the Pacific Ocean, UCSC is also only minutes away from the technology capital of the world, Silicon Valley. The city and campus provide safe study environments, as well as a wealth of recreational opportunities, from golfing and swimming to shopping and wine tasting.

2. How can I prepare myself to enter a university in the U.S.A.?

English Language International provides a number of programs from which you can choose to prepare yourself to enter a university or college. The Intensive English Program, with its TOEFL preparation elective, the University Prep course, and the possibility of attending regular UCSC courses for credit, are all choices that will help you meet your goal.

3. Can I take classes at different levels? If I am a beginner, how long should I plan to study?

You can study English from beginning to advanced levels in the Intensive English Program. If you are just beginning to study English, most students need to study at least six months before they reach an intermediate level of proficiency.

4. Can I live in a campus dormitory or apartment?

Yes! English Language International offers international participants convenient onsite housing. The University Town Center is located downtown and offers the opportunity to live in a studio apartment with another international or UC Santa Cruz student. It is an independent living option and does not include meals.

5. Is it possible to live with a host family?

Yes! We are able to place you with a host family either in the city of Santa Cruz or a nearby community. All of our families are interviewed by the host family coordinator. You can choose a plan that includes meals, or one that does not. With each option, you pay your host family directly.

6. Can I take classes on campus during my stay in Santa Cruz?

Yes! Students at the advanced level may enroll in UCSC courses for credit on a space available basis and with permission from the course professor and the ELI Academic Coordinator. Students may also choose to audit a class for no credit.

7. Who will my teachers be?

ELI instructors are highly trained professionals who have many years of experience teaching in the U.S. and abroad.

8. How can I see other cities in California?

English Language International organizes a number of weekend and evening field trips to cities and other popular destinations in California. A short list of destinations includes San Francisco, Monterey, Carmel, San Jose, and Yosemite National Park.
