1. Why do people from all over the world choose
to study at UC Santa Cruz?
The University of California, Santa Cruz, is one of the
most beautiful university campuses in the world. Surrounded
by towering redwoods and the crashing surf of the Pacific
Ocean, UCSC is also only minutes away from the technology
capital of the world, Silicon Valley. The city and campus
provide safe study environments, as well as a wealth of
recreational opportunities, from golfing and swimming to
shopping and wine tasting.
2. How can I prepare myself to enter a university
in the U.S.A.?
English Language International provides a number of programs
from which you can choose to prepare yourself to enter
a university or college. The Intensive English Program,
with its TOEFL preparation elective, the University Prep
course, and the possibility of attending regular UCSC courses
for credit, are all choices that will help you meet your
goal.
3. Can I take classes at different levels? If
I am a beginner, how long should I plan to study?
You can study English from beginning
to advanced levels in the Intensive English Program. If
you are just beginning to study English, most students
need to study at least six months before they reach an
intermediate level of proficiency.
4. Can I live in a campus dormitory or apartment?
Yes! English Language International offers international
participants convenient onsite housing. The University
Town Center is located downtown and offers the opportunity
to live in a studio apartment with another international
or UC Santa Cruz student. It is an independent living option
and does not include meals.
5. Is it possible to live with a host family?
Yes! We are able to place you with a host family either
in the city of Santa Cruz or a nearby community. All of
our families are interviewed by the host family coordinator.
You can choose a plan that includes meals, or one that
does not. With each option, you pay your host family directly.
6. Can I take classes on campus during my stay
in Santa Cruz?
Yes! Students at the advanced level may enroll in UCSC
courses for credit on a space available basis and with
permission from the course professor and the ELI Academic
Coordinator. Students may also choose to audit a class
for no credit.
7. Who will my teachers be?
ELI instructors are highly trained professionals who have
many years of experience teaching in the U.S. and abroad.
8. How can I see other cities in California?
English Language International organizes a number of weekend
and evening field trips to cities and other popular destinations
in California. A short list of destinations includes San
Francisco, Monterey, Carmel, San Jose, and Yosemite National
Park.
9. Where is Santa Cruz?
Our lovely city is located approximately 120 kilometers
south of San Francisco, 72 kilometers from Monterey and
Carmel and 44 kilometers from San Jose and the Silicon
Valley.
10. Can I take courses to improve my skills as
a professional?
Yes! UCSC Extension offers hundreds of courses throughout
the year. You can choose from courses in Art & Design,
Business & Management, Biotechnology and Pharmaceuticals,
Education, Hardware and Systems Technologies, and Software
Technologies. These courses are offered in our Silicon
Valley campuses, just a short drive away.
