Susie Miller - Susie, who joined the staff in 1999, is Director of ELI-English Language and International Programs. She has more than 25 years of experience teaching English as a Second and Foreign Language (ESL/EFL) and designing international programs. Susie has lived in Brazil and Kuwait and has traveled extensively throughout the world. She is eager to show you the academic, business and social opportunities that ELI has to offer.

Dear Friends,
I have been at UC Santa Cruz since 1999 and am still in love with this campus and the city of Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz is a place where you can assimilate into the local culture quickly.
Our English Language International programs and state-of-the-art modern facility are both undiscovered gems for many of you who are seeking the right place to study. Our program staff and teachers are devoted to serving the needs of our students and finding the right program and courses for them. Our location on the main downtown street, Pacific Avenue, allows you to fully integrate into our local society each day.
All of these riches make up what I call the Santa Cruz Advantage. Come visit us soon to study and you, too, will find your own treasures.

Michael Mrache - Michael is the contract program coordinator who corresponds and works directly with international schools and agents in designing programs to meet their special educational and training needs. Michael is a graduate of Purdue University in Business Management. Before coming to ELI in 2001, he worked for almost six years in the Financial Services Department at UCSC Extension. An avid cyclist and health enthusiast, Michael enjoys bicycling to work every day—about 20 miles roundtrip from his home. He is very personable, brings levity to the department, and enjoys meeting and helping international students.

I have lived in the beautiful Santa Cruz area for almost 16 years and have fallen in love with it. I enthusiastically welcome you to ELI and our exciting and diverse city of Santa Cruz, nestled between the beautiful beaches of the Pacific Ocean and majestic redwood forests of the Santa Cruz Mountains. I am the Program Coordinator at ELI and am willing to assist you in any way I can. I trust you will have a rewarding cultural and educational experience that you can take back home and share with your friends and family. I look forward to meeting each and every one of you!

Lori Buehring Miller - Lori is the Academic Coordinator at ELI and helps students with their academic needs. Before coming to Santa Cruz, she taught ESL at UCLA and USC in Southern California and received her M.A. in Linguistics. She has also worked in Spain and the Czech Republic, and was a foreign exchange student in Denmark. Lori greatly enjoys traveling, language and cultural studies, and the outdoors.

As the Academic Coordinator, I help all ELI students to achieve their goals. I am also an Instructor in the program, where I teach a variety of courses. I look forward to meeting you and helping you have a wonderful experience in Santa Cruz.

Jennifer Gerrard - Jennifer Gerrard joined the ELI staff in 2006 as the International Programs Coordinator. Part of her job is to organize and coordinate recreational activities, such as the trips to Yosemite National Park, San Francisco, and Monterey. Before coming to ELI, Jennifer worked at the International Human Rights Law Institute at DePaul University College of Law in Chicago, where she coordinated the logistical aspects of human rights projects in Iraq. Jennifer is a graduate of DePaul University with a degree in Political Science and Women's Studies.

I recently moved to the Santa Cruz area and I am continually impressed with the natural beauty here. Santa Cruz has a vibrant downtown and beach area, providing students with many opportunities for entertainment and cultural events. If you have any questions about the recreational trips that ELI offers, please feel free to stop by my desk to ask. Anna Zagorska –Anna is our Admissions and Housing Coordinator and the ELI
Immigration Advisor. She is originally from Poland and has lived in the
United States since she was nine. She went to high school and college in
Santa Cruz and completed her Masters in International Studies at the
University of Washington in Seattle. She has traveled extensively, speaks
Polish, French and German, and has been working with international students
for more than eight years.

Carol Johnson – Carol worked in the Electronics Industry in Silicon Valley for 19 years, where she held both sales and product marketing positions. As the Sales and Marketing Coordinator for ELI, she is delighted to be working in an academic environment that allows her to meet and work with people from all corners of the world. Carol spent a summer studying French language and culture at the University of Paris-Sorbonne. Carol still feels the benefits of her "study abroad" experience, many years later and likes promoting this experience to students from around the world. An aspiring nature photographer, Carol loves to travel and enjoys hiking with her two dogs.

The best part of my job is meeting the bright and interesting students from all over the world who come here to study. I learn so much FROM you about your home country and your culture. I love attending the ELI graduation ceremony because I hear the students say how much they have enjoyed their time at ELI and as a part of the Santa Cruz community. Students also demonstrate how much their English speaking skills have improved. I feel proud to work at ELI when I see our students’ great achievements and their happy faces.

Anahe Hartounian - Anahe (you can also call her Ani) is the ELI International Programs Assistant. She graduated from our sister campus, UC Davis in 2007 with a degree in International Relations. Anahe studied for one year at University College Dublin in Dublin, Ireland, so she knows what it is like to live and study in another country. During her time in Davis, she worked on campus with the Financial Aid Office and the Education Abroad Center. After graduation, she worked as a Program Coordinator with the UC Education Abroad Program.

I will be the bright, happy face you see first when walking into the ELI office! I have lived in California for nearly my entire life, and have just recently moved to the Santa Cruz area. I look forward to sharing my enthusiasm for all that Santa Cruz and California have to offer. Anytime you have a question, just ask me and I will do my best to find the answer. Christopher Fathman - Chris joined the ELI staff in July of 2005 as an ESL instructor. He has 9 years of ESL teaching experience. Chris has lived and worked as an ESL/EFL instructor in India for 3 years, in Santiago, Chile for a year, and in Phuket, Thailand for a year. He has taught at University-based and private Intensive English Programs, and has experience teaching Community College courses. He holds a BA in Anthropology, an MA in TESOL and a CA Teaching Credential in Social Sciences. In his free time, Chris enjoys traveling, surfing, snowboarding and reading.

Dairea Burum - Dairea joined the ELI staff in June of 2002 as an ESL instructor. She has 6 years of teaching experience in the ESL field. She has taught at different schools in California, Colorado and Mexico. She received her M.A. in TESOL in 2002 at San Jose State University. She enjoys traveling, mountain biking and surfing in her free time.

Edward Tripp - Edward began teaching at ELI in 2000 after teaching English in Korea and in China. He earned a B.A. in Chinese Language and Literature, and he is well versed in both Asian and Western philosophy. Edward received a MATESOL degree at San Jose State University in 1997. He is working on a second Master's degree at SJSU in Linguistics, specializing in Computational Linguistics. Currently, Edward is teaching during the summer session, in addition to teaching ELI online courses. He is also a Lecturer at San Jose State University during the regular school year.
